Provenance:Probably acquired from Whistler by Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910), London; bought from Hermann Wunderlich & Co., New York, (receipt, 9 November 1898), by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), Detroit, MI, November 1898; bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, 1919.

Note on foul biting:large patch above bottom plate edge, scattered flecks and small patches on upper third of plate to left and right of figure, vise mark at lower right corner, two small, prominent spots at lower right and series of small spots between figure's arm and right plate edge (perhaps associated with drypoint lines?); numerous remnants of lines from earlier design--along right edge of printed subject, across right arm and cello and at lower left plate edge  
Print note:Despite the rather odd wiping of tone at right, the lines with their fresh burr are strong and dark and the impression good.
