Provenance:Probably acquired from Whistler by Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910), London; bought from Hermann Wunderlich & Co., New York, (receipt 9 November 1898), by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), Detroit, MI, November 1898; bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, 1919.

Print note:A good, bright impression. Facial features of heads sketched below figure are mostly burnished out but general shapes and hair remain visible; new drypoint work has fair amount of burr; the new dark spots of foul biting do not appear in Kennedy's illustration of state 2
