Provenance:Probably acquired from Whistler by Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910), London; bought from Hermann Wunderlich & Co., New York (receipt, 9 November 1898), by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), Detroit, MI, 1898; bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, 1919.

Print tone:very faint overall plate tone on background and pavement; dark area of tone to right of shadow at center right appears to have been etched into plate (open bite or sulphur tint?) as it is visible in the state IV impression illustrated in Kennedy  
Note on foul biting:minor, scattered and heavier around printer's address (with evidence of scaping/burnishing). The re-bitten area round the inscription shows some foul-biting.  
Print note:A dark impression with soft, smudgy darker area to right of the woman, over the cross-hatching. There are areas of vertical soft lines to left and right of the figure, possibly produced by preliminary polishing and burnishing of the plate.
