Two studies of women dates from 1886 or 1887. The copper plate was close in size to The Village Sweet Shop [266], which dates from 1886, while the technique and subject can be compared with such portraits as The Little Hat [366], suggesting a date of 1887.
Although the drypoint was grouped by Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932) and Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) with drypoints dating from about 1873 or 1874, the technique is quite different from Whistler's earlier work. 1
