Thomas Reynolds Lamont was a genre painter and watercolourist. He was married to Lucy Margaret Lamont. They don't appear to have had any children of their own, but Lamont was named god father of Arthur Denniston, Sylvia Maurier, Christopher Moore, Olivia Edith Smart and Claude Augustin Smart, to each of whom he left £50 at his death (#12450).
Life:
Lamont studied in the studio of Charles Gleyre in Paris in the 1850s with George Du Maurier, E. J. Poynter, Thomas Armstrong and JW. He appears in Du Maurier's novel Trilby as the character Laird and additionally features in a number of Du Maurier's cartoons.
Lamont, who also studied in Spain, exhibited four works at the Royal Academy in London. He also exhibited in London with the Royal Water Colour Society and Agnew and Sons Gallery, as well as at the Royal Scottish Academy, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He was elected an associate of the Royal Water Colour Society in 1866.
In the late 1870s Lamont was again in contact with JW, being invited along with Armstrong to a dinner at JW's London home (#08062).
