Life:
Carter was a partner in the New York firm of Attorneys and Councillors at Law, Carter, Hughes and Cravath, of 346 Broadway. He collected etchings, including works by JW, and was a Member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He appears to have become acquainted with JW through the New York lawyer and collector Howard Mansfield.
